PolyOne Sustainable Solutions

PolyOne has established the “PolyOne Sustainable Solutions” certification to denote those products or services that meet defined standards for sustainability in areas such as renew-ability, recycle-ability, reusability, eco-conscious composition, or resource efficiency. These criteria are:

  • Renewable: ÜSolutions that are based on, or support the use of, renewable, compostable or bio-degradable resources.
  • Reusable: Packaging and other logistics-related systems which are easily returned or reused.
  • Recyclable: Solutions which incorporate post-consumer or post-industrial recycle content or which lend themselves to recycling such as PolyOne’s PlanetPakTM packaging system.
  • Eco-conscious composition: Solutions that respond to ever-changing market needs by offering alternatives to traditional materials such as lead, bisphenol-A (BPA), phthalates, or halogens.
  • Resource efficient: Solutions that help conserve the earth’s resources such as those that enable more efficient production, reduce part weight or material consumption, enable faster cycle times or lower energy consumption or provide better insulating properties.

PolyOne has established the Chairman’s Council on Sustainability sponsored by Stephen D. Newlin, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of PolyOne.  This council, which is led by PolyOne’s Chief Innovation Officer, Dr. Cecil Chappelow, includes key members of the Company’s senior leadership team and is responsible to provide leadership and oversight of PolyOne’s corporate sustainability activities.

EH&S Governance

In addition to the Chairman’s Council on Sustainability, PolyOne’s Board of Directors has a long-standing Environment, Health and Safety (EH&S) Committee.  The charter of the Committee is to oversee and monitor the establishment and maintenance by management of comprehensive environmental, health, safety, security and product stewardship policies, standards and practices to procure regulatory compliance and safety/environmental operational excellence on a global basis.

Policies and Practices

PolyOne has a number of policies and practices which govern the way in which the Company and its employees manage issues ranging from environmental stewardship to ethics to the security of our people and facilities.  These policies include:

EH&S Management, Reporting & Audit

A key part of our management systems are internal audit and review programs, which periodically examine plant operations and develop recommendations to enhance performance.  The scope of this audit/review process includes compliance to PolyOne policies and standards as well as applicable regulations.  These standards include:

  • Environmental, Health and Safety Capital Appropriation Review
  • Chemical Release Reporting
  • EH&S Management System
  • Empty Container Management
  • Secondary Containment of Chemical Compounds
  • Recycle/Reuse and Waste Management Procedures
  • Groundwater Protection Program
  • New Chemical Review
  • Pellet & Resin Release Prevention
  • Crisis Management Emergency Response Planning
  • Standards for Confined Space Entry
  • Standards for Trailer/Fork Lift Truck Entry
  • Standards for Hot Work
  • Standards for Lock Out /Tag Out
  • Material Safety Data Sheet and Label Management
  • Product Regulatory Compliance Review

PolyOne strives to achieve high environmental standards in both mature and emerging markets through the development of security and environmental management systems, audit/review procedures, certifications, local training programs and best-practice management systems.

Our EH&S Security Management System includes forward-planning process which reviews potential environmental and community impact of our manufacturing operations and identifies opportunities to improve the performance of our operations and comply with current and anticipated regulations.

Our Environmental Management System establishes internal performance and audit/review standards for all our facilities comparable to ISO 14001 standards.  Certain of our facilities have also received official certification to the ISO 14001 International Environmental Management System.  ISO 14001 certifications follow intensive environmental audits of organizations, conducted by third-party ISO representatives.  At present, ten of our facilities hold ISO 14001 Certification.  In order to continuously track progress made toward achieving environmental, health and safety (EH&S) goals, PolyOne has implemented a reporting program which includes:

  • Monthly reporting of production rates, waste generation rates, recycling rates, disposal methods, and compliance.
  • Quarterly reporting of progress made toward completion of internal environmental audit/review action items.
  • Annual reporting of energy use, water use, environmental capital needs for the coming five years, potential impacts of pending regulations, and narrative status reports on management systems related to air, land and water pollution prevention and control.
  • Monthly, quarterly and yearly reporting of safety and health statistics and benchmarking against other best-in-class companies.

Recycle and Waste Reduction

PolyOne reports annually on our progress toward reducing waste disposed in landfills.  Our success in this area can be seen in the graph below.  In the period from 2000 – 2011, the Company reduced landfill waste by greater than 80%.  In 2007 we added Total Waste to Energy reporting with a goal of increasing both recycled waste and waste converted to energy.

Safety Performance

PolyOne has a long-standing commitment to safety and has a history of world-class safety performance in an industry that has one of the highest historical incidence rates (according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, U.S. Department of Labor).

Recordable incident rate = number of United States Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recordable per 200,000 man-hours worked.

Food, Drug, Medical

PolyOne’s Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) internal guidelines govern the manufacture of intermediate products for our customer’s use in making  food, drug and medical (FDM) final product applications.  As an intermediate supplier, PolyOne’s manufacturing facilities are not required to register with nor be directly held to the FDA’s specific good manufacturing practice requirements.

PolyOne plays an important role in enhancing customer safety and has implemented internal GMP guidelines to help prevent products from being unintentionally adulterated.  Modeled after FDA’s GMP requirements, these internal procedures include internal audit/reviews of all PolyOne’s manufacturing facilities involved in making products entering into food and/or drug markets  including these elements:

  • Raw material traceability and quality testing
  • Good housekeeping procedures
  • Pest control
  • Good laboratory practices
  • Hygiene policies
  • Good documentation procedures
  • Finished good quality testing

PolyOne plant personnel involved in making products for FDM use by our customers undergo initial and annual training on the particular processes and procedures involved in the manufacture of intermediate products for FDM markets.  PolyOne currently has twenty-three facilities globally certified to the Corporation’s GMP program and two facilities certified to "ISD 13485, Medical Device - Quality Management Systems - Requirements for Regulatory Purposes."

Drug Master Files

In support of our customer’s Device Master File submission for healthcare materials, PolyOne develops and maintains U.S. FDA Drug Master Files and Medical Application Files.  Please contact your PolyOne customer service representative for additional information.

Internal Recognition - PolyOne has an internal environmental, health and safety (EH&S) awards program to recognize those PolyOne facilities that demonstrate exceptional performance.  For the environmental award, the criteria include achieving a landfill waste reduction target (which requires the plants to embrace a strong recycle program), compliance with all permit conditions and no un-permitted releases to the environment.  In 2007 two additional criteria were added to the criteria to receive the PolyOne Environmental Award of Excellence.  These criteria are reduction of primary energy source by 2% and reduction of water usage by 5%.

Our safety awards program criteria include no OSHA recordable incidents, no lost-time injuries as well as no serious incidents.  In over 30 plants received a PolyOne Safety Award of Excellence.

External Recognition - In addition to our internal recognition program, PolyOne has also received external recognition, such as the Frost & Sullivan 2008 Colorants and Masterbatches Green Excellence of the Year Award. This award underscores PolyOne’s strategic focus on innovative sustainable solutions which benefit both customers and the environment.
